OCA-WHV Cares: Fundraiser for Feeding Westchester

For many years, OCA-WHV volunteers have been helping out at the Slater Center food pantry on Friday mornings. But our volunteers report that the quality has become poorer and quantity of food has become less just as demand is rising due the SNAP crisis.

Let's show the community that we stand with them in this time of emergency! Our chapter has voted to contribute $1000, and in addition four of OCA-WHV's board members have generously offered $4000 of their own money, for a total of $5000 to match your donations. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by our gala on November 9. Since Feeding Westchester can send two meals to our food banks for every dollar donated, if we achieve our goal, we could potentially buy 20,000 meals!

Feeding Westchester usually feeds 80,000 children in need in our county each month. Through partnerships with local schools, daycares, libraries, and other organizations, the children receive nutritious, kid-friendly, easy-to-prepare food.

 Now comes the crisis: In Westchester, about 1 out of 13 people-- over 35,000 households, including the elderly, children, disabled, and working poor, receive SNAP benefits. They are of all backgrounds, including Asian backgrounds from many countries. They have not received money to buy food yet this month, and when/if they do, they may receive only half. They will have to spend hours in line at the food pantries. The funds offered by NYS and the County are good but not sufficient to make up the loss of our federal tax dollars. There is no time to lose as people must eat every day.
