About the Event
Part of the 2026 Mental Wellness Support Series, the seminar, “Between Expectations and Understanding: Culture, Family History, and Adolescent Mental Health” will be presented by Dr. He Yaliu and on Sunday, November 8th! Refreshments will be served.
Dr. Yaliu He of Westchester is an Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy, a New York City Marriage and Family Therapist, and has a PhD in Family Social Science. She is also founder of Relate Reflect Therapy (https://relatereflecttherapy.com).
Chinese and Asian immigrant families often place high hopes on their children, expectations stemming from both cultural influence and the parents' own life experiences. This lecture, through film clips, explores how cultural expectations, family history, and unspoken wounds affect parent-child relationships and adolescent mental health. Through guided viewing and discussion, participants will learn to identify adolescent stress and struggles, consider the needs of both generations, and acquire practical methods for listening, communicating, and seeking support. Parents and teenagers are welcome to attend.
