Event Details: Join us for a family friendly Chinese language film. This program works to provide Chinese families with an environment where their culture is celebrated and appreciated through films. Each film will be screened in either Mandarin or Cantonese with English subtitles.
October's film is the science fiction The Wandering Earth (2019), directed by Frank Gwo and starring Wu Jing, Qu Chuxiao, Ng Man-tat, and Zhao Jinmai. It is based on the 2000 novella of the same name by Lui Cixin. In the near future, the Sun unexpectedly shows signs of becoming a red giant, threatening to expand and destroy the Earth in just a few centuries. The world jointly begins a radical project to use many thousands of fusion reactors called "Earth Engines" to propel the Earth out of the path of the expanding Sun and eventually move it into a safe orbit around Alpha Centauri. En route however, the Earth's path is disrupted by the gravitational pull of Jupiter, threatening cataclysm if the astronauts on board the Navigation Platform International Space Station meant to guide the project cannot find a solution in time.
The Wandering Earth was a record breaking release at the Chinese box office and represents one of the most popular and successful instances of a Chinese science fiction epic.
