Kevin Xu
My name is Kevin Xu, and I’m a senior at Edgemont Jr. Sr. High School in Scarsdale, NY. Two things have been a major part of my life: Engineering and the AAPI community.
As a student engineer, I’ve led a research project focused on lithium-ion battery degradation. I built a system to charge/discharge batteries, collecting extensive data on how varying temperatures and charging currents affect battery degradation rates. To me, engineering is about solving problems and improving lives. With technology advancing rapidly, and the world getting more and more digitized, I believe electrical engineers will play a vital role in shaping the future.
My journey through electrical engineering has also been influenced by the AAPI community. I’ve seen contributions that engineers like my dad have brought to society, and the triumph and discrimination against AAPI engineers. A bit about my AAPI journey is that I’ve been studying Chinese at my Chinese school since first grade, and have since studied AP chinese, and became a teaching assistant. Since 2019, I’ve been an active member of OCA-WHV, participating in annual Galas and Asian heritage events. I’ve also been in a summer reading program to raise awareness to mental health and equality.
