In the Tainbao era of the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century CE, Li Shande is a low-ranking functionary in the imperial government set with the seemingly impossible task of procuring fresh lychees from Lingnan province and bringing them back to Chang'an - more than a thousand miles away - in time for the birthday celebration of the emperor's favored consort, Yang Guifei. The situation becomes even more difficult when a jealous minister attempts to sabotage the delivery and claim credit instead. RSVP
